Ethics 14 - More on Care Ethics

Hello! Again, we’re going to have a class in three parts! The first part won’t be any new philosophy content, but then we’re going to dive more deeply into questions of care ethics

Research tools and essay progress

We’re going to start by checking in about how your essay is going, any questions you have, and by talking about your experience with Zotero.

The Ethics of Care

We have three things we’re going to talk about.

A: Virginia Held on the Ethics of Care

Watch the following video, and make notes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0XcQgXn-yM

B: The Ethics of Care as Moral Theory

Go back to the text, and try to answer the question: what, according to Virginia Held, are the major features of the ethics of care? We’ll do this in groups.

C: Can Care Transform Us?

Answer the following two questions, drawing on Held’s text, the video, and your own thoughts.

  1. What are the main ways in which care happens within your own societies and social contexts?
  2. Do you think that a greater emphasis on care could transform these societies and social contexts? If so, how?

Reading for next time

We’re now looking at our last-but-one body of theory, and asking about African moral theories (our final set of questions will be about religion and ethics). For your homework, read Toward an African Moral Theory, and post your reflections on Canvas discussion board.
